Marriage 1 : Eleanor LEWIS m. 16 June 1915 El Paso, Texas, USA, b. 21 June 1890, d. 03 October 1930
Notes:
"Parents lived on a farm in Illinois. Old family story of Abe Lincoln stopping there when he returned books.
Born in Elkhart, Illinois, a few miles from Springfield, Il. He graduated high school from Williamsville, Ill. One of 9 brothers and sisters. First generation born in America. Born on family farm near Elkart, Illinois. Lived on the farm until 21. Basic education in Logan County public schools. Completed High School at Williamsville in 1897.
In 1897 he attended college at the State Normal School at Normal, Ill (it is now Ill State U.). He left in 1898 to work for a Nebraska construction company. In 1902 he returned and attended U of Illinois and in 1906 received his degree in Electrical Engineering, and went to work for Commonwealth Edison Co. in Chicago.
Called himself a "Commercial and Financial Engineeer". In 1907 worked for Western Electric, who's president at the time was named Titus. Because his hair turned white young, he was called 'Titus's white haired boy'. Designed and installed telephone systems from St. Louis, MO to Cincinatti, Missouri. He later became asst. Sales Mgr in Kansas City, MO. After marriage lived with Eleanor's parents house, 472 West Third Street Hoisington.
Bought house (in 1927 from a Dr. Cook. It was totally remodeled when purchased. The house was in Aunt Katie's name for a short period of time in the 30's when the bank was going to foreclose on Dad. After that was taken care of it was transferred back to Dad's name. - James Murphy email of 8/20/98.) at 554 West 2nd Street for about $5K and put in $15K renovations.
Worked for the Public Utility in Salina until it folded. Depression hit, owed money, paid off at 8% to everone. His job was to get electric power franchises to serve a town, competing with other utility companies. Picked up a few franchises for himself in the towns of Albert and Rush Center. Formed a company, "Utility Service Company", buying power from Kansas Power and Light.
Read item in paper about REA to bring electricity to rural areas. Got franchise from Kansas Power commission after big fight with Kansas Power and Light. Co was called Kansas-Three- Barton. Built lines and sold power to Rush Center and Albert (lines emanating from Larned and LaCrose). Was in financial trouble because he had borrowed money on the utility from his brother-in-law's (John M Lewis) wife, Agnes Wildgen (her family had money and owned property up and down mainstreet). High interest rate high risk loan. Eventually sold company to a REA coop out of Great Bend.
Ran for the state legislature against Ray Smith (incumbent). Govenor at time was Woodring? Served as President local Chamber of Commerse. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and was Past Grand Knight.
During war, there was a military base in Great Bend and he worked there, did well and would have been offered another position but they found out he was about to turn 70." ---- Conversation with Genevieve Murphy Foran 8/26/98.
---- email from Margaret Ann Murphy Wilbur of Sept 6 1998

Marriage 1 : Bridget MURPHY m. 04 March 1886 Logan County, Il, b. 24 January 1864, d. 28 October 1918
Notes:
Had a farm in Freeport, Illinois according to Grennan website.[patrickbarron.FTW]
John Murphy (son of Patrick Murphy and Anne Barron) married Bridget Murphy (daughter of Patrick Murphy and Mary Margaret Donahue). They grew up on adjacent farms in Elkart IL.
After marriage they live on a the Graham farm near Fancie Prarie, IL. Four of their children were born on this farm. These children were Patrick, Edwin, Mary Elizabeth (Mame) and Agnes (Tade). The children attended Prarie College School.
Later the family moved the the Gilette farm mear Cornland, IL. Evidently the house was stately and the family had good memories about living there. In 1900 John and Bridget moved the family to the Tansey farm in Glenarm, IL.
The school was five miles from the farm and the children had to walk most days to the O'Neil School, all during the school year. Only occasionally did they get a ride home with the hired man (Jim Coleman) who picked them up in a lumber wagon when farm chores were slack.
John Bernard Murphy was born on this farm in Glenarm, IL.[patrickmurphyancestors.FTW]

Marriage 1 : Charlotte CRALEY , b. between 1868 and 1888 (calc)
Notes:
According to Grennan website and family stories passed on by Genevieve (Murphy) Foran, Joe and Charlotte had a home in St. Louis. When he retired they had a chicken farm in souther Illinois. She was struck by lightning trying to get baby chickens into shelter during a storm.
According to Mary E. Murphy-Barbre family history, Joe was a veternarian, practicing in Sullivan, Illinois until he received an appointment as government meat inspector. He and wife Charlotte lived in Georgia a few years before locating to St. Louis. They bought a dairy farm near Greenville, Illinois but lived there only a few years. When Charlotte was killed by lightening he sold the farm and returned to St. Louis. He was the caretaker for the Nuns at the farm at St. Vincent's in Normandy for several years. He is buried with his parents in Lincoln, Illinois.
They had no children.

Notes:
Mary did not marry and was engaged by the public schools in Elkart for 15 years.[patrickmurphyancestors.FTW]
According to Grennan website, Mame taught school in southern Illinois, Springfield area for over 38 years.per Dec 22, 1937 letter to J.R. she lived at 4975 Chippewa Street, St. Louis MO.
Stories told by "Watt" Murphy to his children: Aunt Mame was interested in genealogy and she finally got herself back to some king. Aunt Mame believed she could remember when Abraham Lincoln was shot. Quite logically "Watt" would point out that Aunt Mame was born in February 1864 and Lincoln was shot in April of 1865. Aunt Mame always replied, "Just the same, I can remember Mother saying, 'Our President has been shot'." She never gave in, never conceded.
After 40 years of teaching Mame retired and made her home with Kate and Watt on the farm near Divernon, and later moved to St. Louis with them. When they became less able to take care of themselves Mame lived with Helen and Jack Britt. At the age of 92 she passed away and is buried with her parents in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln, Illinois.

Marriage 1 : Ann BARRON m. 09 October 1855 Galena, Jo Daviess County, IL, b. 15 August 1836, d. 18 May 1915
Notes:
[patrickbarron.FTW]
Patrick Murphy of County Carlow moved to the USA in about 1850 with his sisters and brother. Patrick was born in 1825 and would have been about 25 when they sailed to America. Patrick attended public schools until his 14th year then he worked for his step-father, Patrick Burns, until he was 18. He then lived with his sister for a time and on April 8, 1849 emigrated to America with his brother from Wexford (city).{this information shows that Patrick was 25 when he sailed. The sailing craft was the Don Brodie. It was a pleasent voyage with Captain Williams which landed in New York City May 1, 1849 making the trip 23 days long.
Patrick stayed in NYC one day and one night and then went on to Bennington VT. He worked on a farm there for $71/2 a month. His hours were 4 AM to 9 PM. At the end of a year he moved to Hoosick Falls, NY and worked for a man for 5 years. In the Fall of 1854 he went by rail to Chicago Il and from there to Springfield. He moved to Chatham IL but then went to work at the American Hotel in Springfield for $25 a month. He worked there for 11/2 years and then moved to Freeport where he then met Anne Barron. (Patrick suffered a long illness that is not named in the history)
Patrick and his wife Anne Barron eloped to Galena, IL and returned to live in Freeport for 5 or 6 years. They then moved south in IL to a place in Menard Cty. where the purchased 40 acres of land. They lived there 7 years then sold and rented for 2 years and then moved to Hurlbut Twp., Logan Cty. and bought a 200 arcre farm. They raised the most marketable stock. He was a Democrat and a Catholic.
One of Patrick and Anne's children remembered the farm rentals and purchases as follows: (Patrick and Anne sold the 20 acres when it became to small for the seven children they had to date. They rented the Mount farm of 120 acres. Later they rented the McGalliard farm of 160 acres at $5 per acre per year. Within two years they had saved $2000 and bought that farm for $50 and acre.}
They had 10 children that lived to adulthood.
What happened to Patrick's brother and sisters is not now known.
Notes after the 1995 trip to Ireland by J. Patrick Gatton and Barbara (Weis) Gatton:
Patrick must have left Ireland circa 1850, when he was about 25. He came
to NYC with his brother Thomas and his sisters Julia and Anne.
Patrick's parents must have stayed in Ireland. If they were living at the time
of the childrens' leaving, it must have been an enormously hard time for them to have all their children leave.
Patrick Murphy was born in 1825. Anne was born in 1836. Their son, John, was born in IL. in 1858. Anne would have been 22 yrs old. Patrick 33.
We assume they were married in about 1856.

Notes:
Came to New York ahead of his family. When he had a place for them he sent for the family in 1854, Mary Dooley Murphy, his wife, and their two sons Patick and Moses, and perhaps one daughter who died shortly thereafter. "Ole Peter" bought a lot in Calvary Cemetery in Springfield as there was no Catholic grounds nearer to home.
