Marriage 1 : Margaret Ann JONES m. 12 December 1872 Cleveland, Ohio, b. 08 August 1852, d. 28 June 1932
Notes:
Reddish brown eyes, curly brown hair. 5' 11" tall. Built the Jones Road Congregational Church, Cleveland around1876. Moved to Rice County (north of Raymond) from Cleveland after marriage. Then moved to Great Bend KA, before locating in 1891 in Hoisington as manager and part owner of the E.R. Moses Company. He was associated with this firm for twenty-two years before selling out to live a retired life. Celebrated 60th weding aniversary Jan 14th 1933 in Hoisington. (Source: newspaper article)
----------------
Lived in Chicago before moving to Cleveland just before the big fire. Somehow involved in designing/building a railroad car for the Mayor of (?) and winning a trip to San Francisco (family was mad at him because he didn't take his wife with him). More of a cabinet maker than a carpenter... Claimed to have shaken Queen Victoria's hand on London Bridge... Also claimed he shook hands with Colonel Grant and Abraham Lincoln. When older he slipped on soap and fell down some stairs and was a little strange after that. Used to toss pebbles at passerbys so they would stop and talk... Shot a BB gun at Genevieve while she was tree climbing. Genevieve 'faked' a fall, and the whole family gave David heck... In Rice County, lived several years on a farm in Chase, KA. Aunt Katie told story of cutting ice from the creek and storing it in a dug pit covered with straw, and having ice available all summer long. He built the Lewis house in Hoisington, and the store "Lewis & Moses" building. He may have come to America from London, England. Someone (an uncle?) owned a ship and David was apprenticed aboard for four years. He 'jumped ship' in America with his carpenter tool box, which was big enough for children to play in." (Source: Genevieve Murphy Foran conversation with Michael Foran Jr. on 8/25/98 and 8/30/98)
----------------
(Source: D.J. Lewis's own handwriting in Family Bible) "D. J. Lewis came to America from Pembrey South Wales. Sailed from Llanelli South Wales on May 1869 on board the sailing ship Brigatine (Nina) took us five weeks to come across, and landed in Halifax Nova Scotia. From there I went to New York and hence to Scranton Pennsylvania, where I had my first birth day in the US on July 28, 1869."
_________
(Source: Margaret Ann Murphy notes) David had attended a trade school and became a carpenter and contractor by the time he was 19. He was very competent. His tool chest was (as remembered by source) 6'X2 1/2'X2 1/2'. At 19 when one of the ships Brigantin was sailing for America he decided to go too. He had an argument with his (?) uncle, the captain and left the ship in Nova Scotia, then to Scranton, PA (during the Molly Maquire days), then to Oshkosh Wis. He made his way to Chicago. In Chicago there was a lot of poverty. He decided to head west Oct 8, 1871, and as he was standing on the end of the observation car, he saw Chicago burning. At Cleveland Ohio (South Newburg) he met another Welsh family - the Morgan Jones family. They had a large mercantile business. Me married the oldest daughter Margaret Ann Jones. In 1878 they moved to Rice Co. Kansas where D.J. Lewis bought 1/4 sec fo land & built his home.
1880 Census has him in Valley Twp, Rice Co. Kansas living next door to wife's parent Morgan Morgan Jones and his wife Margaret.
After a cyclone demolished his home he rebuilt & stayed until 1887 at which time he became the contractor for the college in Great Bend. Came to Hoisington and built the Degen Store building (Main & Broadway on SW corner), then several years later, in 1891 he and ER Moses formed a partnership & he moved to Hoisington where he took over the management of the E.R. Moses mercantile business. After he moved to Hoisington he was the contractor for the Degan Mercantile store - across the street & angled across fromt he Moses Mercantile which her built also. The Moses Mercantile finally became the John M. Lewis Hardware & the building is still standing in 1992.
Public school and CopperWorks School in Wales. Member Methodist Church. Very artistic. Won awards and medals in England. In America did hardwood work on Santa Fe coaches and received blue ribbon for best car (he built the superintendant official car "99".) and a trip to California. Decided sense of humor. Sailed from England in 1869, intending to repair woodwork on Uncle's ship, the "Nina" and return, but had a quarrel with uncle on the way and refused to return on the same boat, so he stayed in America. His father died at 38 from TB contracted in Crimean War and he was raised by grandparents. Ran hardware store in Hoisington. -- Bernise Murphy research
1910 Census lists both his parents born in Wales.
Birth Certificate for David Lewis states: born July 29, 1849 to John Lewis and Eleanor Griffiths at 69 Gainsford Street, Southwark, London England Registration District "Saint Olave's Southwark, sub-district of Saint John in the county of Surrey. (Birth Cert on file)
