Donald Louis Gatton grew up in Pawnee, went two years to Springfield Jr. College. He then became a Navy Pilot and was in World War II. After the war he returned to Pawnee for a few years, built a small house on Louis's farm. He returned to the Navy and served until his retirement. He had been retired about 12 years when he died. In retirement he learned "hand magic". He was quite good at the practice of magic and kept the family entertained at our gatherings.

Don was a quiet man that we all loved. He was supportive of us. In later years we all talked with Don about the challenges and joys of raising children. The poem "Magic Man" that Patrick wrote is a rememberance of Don.

A REMEMBRANCE OF MOM AND DAD

AS I WAS WALKING THE OTHER DAY,
DOWN A ROAD THAT SEEMED FAMILIAR,
ITS FEATURES BEGAN TO CHANGE.
THE BOULEVARD APPEARED AS A NARROW STREET AND
OPEN LAND A FIELD OF CORN.

OVER THERE WAS A HOUSE LIKE OURS ON THE FARM
FROM LONG AGO.

AS I CAME CLOSER THEY WERE STANDING THERE
IN THEIR YOUTH, MOM AND DAD.
PLANNING SOMETHING IT SEEMED TO ME.

THERE THOUGHTS CAME TO ME SO RAPIDLY THAT I EXPERIENCED
THE YEARS OF THEIR LIFE'S IN A BLINK.

THE ESSENCE OF MY MEMORY IS WHAT HAS STIRRED ME TO
TELL YOU THIS STORY.

I LOOKED BACK OVER THEIR LIVES TO DETERMINE
WHAT WERE MY EXPERIENCES WITH THEM THAT
GAVE ME THE ABILITY TO LIVE WELL AND ADJUST
TO MY OWN LIFE'S EXPERIENCES.

MANY THINGS, THE PSHYCO-ANALYSTS WOULD SAY.
AND I'M SURE THEY ARE RIGHT
BUT THE TRIALS OF LIFE GAVE ME AN INSIGHT.

FAITH IN WHAT THEY BELIEVED
WAS WHAT GAVE MOM AND DAD
HEARTS THAT SING.

OH, THEY HAD THEIR BELIEFS
AND OTHERS HAD OTHER ONES,
BUT MOM AND DAD WERE AT PEACE
WITH THEIR OWN;
AND COMFORTABLE WITH THOSE
OTHERS HELD.

FAITH, QUITE SIMPLY WAS
THE BONDING MATTER OF THEIR LIVES.

TIMES IN THEIR LIVES WENT FROM GOOD
TO TOUGH AND BACK AGAIN.
AND SOME OF THEIR FRIENDS
SUFFERED MORE.
SOME WERE BLESSED MOST ALWAYS.

ALONG THE WAY, I NOW RECOGNIZE,
THEY LEARNED VALUED LESSONS
WHEN LIFE BROUGHT EVENTS
CONNECTED TO DEEP SEATED SIGHS.

I WATCHED AS THEY FELL TO THEIR KNEES.
I WATCHED ALSO AS THEY WERE ABLE TO RISE.
UNKNOWINGLY, I THINK,
HERE IS WHERE THEY PLANTED
THE SEED OF FAITH
WITHIN ME.

I LEARNED FROM THEM
HOW TO REACT
WHEN LIFE LEAVES ME DEVASTATED
AND FEARING TO COME BACK.

IN OBSERVING THEM I LEARNED
SOMETHING ABOUT
FAITH AND TENACITY.

settled in Champaign County, Illinois. around Ivesdale. Government land
was available for homesteading, it was poor, boggy land but the Grennan's
